Challenges

If you're looking for a way to stay inspired and motivated, you've come to the right place! Walk Strong Calgary offers FREE annual challenges that you can do at your own level while still striving to see improvements in your endurance, strength and overall health status.

2020 in 2020

Starting January 1, 2020, we're going to push the envelope for mileage and go for 2,020 miles in 2020! Does that seem like a lot? Did your heart just skip a beat? Let's break it down a bit so it doesn't seem so intimidating.

First of all, 2,020 miles between Jan 1 and Dec 31 is an average of 5.5 miles per day. As you probably know, it's recommended by most health and fitness experts that we try to get at least 10,000 steps in every day. If you consider that a mile is approximately 2,000 steps, that's 5 miles right there... you may already have a habit established that will make meeting the challenge much easier! You have the option of counting all of your steps in a day or just fitness miles - that's completely up to you. I want to set you up for success!

To help you with setting your goals, I've created a monthly calendar in MS Excel that will automatically track your miles as you enter the data - both your planned and actual miles. You can print each month for manual tracking if you're not on your computer a lot and enter the data at a time that's convenient. Be sure to open the file right in Excel so you can see the month tabs across the bottom. Below is the file along with PDF's of each month (Jan-June). Note that the original Excel file was set up with formulas.

Keep an eye on Walk Strong Calgary on Facebook for updates and inspiration throughout the year. If you're looking for a free step counter, there are many APPs available on GooglePlay, though you'll need to have your cell phone on you in order for them to track. There are many pedometer-type gadgets available as well, from a standard step counter to FitBit and others, depending on your budget. The nice thing about Walk 15 miles is that we always know how many miles we did in a class because it's tracked through the music! Your instructor can tell you how many miles you completed in a given class. If you're doing the Walk at Home dvds or videos via YouTube or the My Daily Walk APP, these videos are generally done at the standard 4 mph pace on average - 15 minutes is 1 mile.
