We're Adding Core Training!

Post date: May 16, 2015 7:00:52 PM

A strong, stable core is extremely important not only for workouts, but for your activities of daily living as well. All movement begins in the core, sometimes in such a subtle way that you don't even feel it.

Your core is not just your abs - it includes all of the muscles in the low back, the hips, your glutes, and more. Even your calves can be considered part of the core because they attach to the femur, which means they can impact core muscles. A tight calf can limit internal rotation of the knee, causing either the hip or the low back to attempt to execute the rotation to compensate. I call it playing dominoes - one muscle impacts another, and another, and another all the way along the chain.

We do a lot for the core in a Walk Live Class, believe it or not, because all of the moves we do involve these important muscles, integrating them into the exercises in a way that mimics many of the ways they work together in daily life. This is actually a very effective, efficient way to train the core. But sometimes we need that little bit extra...

Starting on Wednesday May 20, after completing the 6 p.m. Walk Live Class, please feel free to stay for a powerful exercise session on the floor - you will need to bring a mat - I recommend a Pilates mat for this class - they're thicker and offer better padding than a yoga mat. We'll be doing a balanced workout that isolates muscles in both the front and back of the body, and will even do some shoulder stabilization exercises.

Everyone has a six pack... it may just be hidden behind some extra layers of abdominal fat. Let's tighten and tone to flatten up, and strengthen all of the muscles in your core while we're at it!
